Greater Manchester police said there were about 60 vehicles attending a car-meet in the area at the time of the incident. Witnesses reported that there were a number of people on the pavement watching cars drive around the roundabout.

A witness, who did not want to be named, told the Manchester Evening News: “A car hit five or six people. People were flung everywhere. I saw a man in a bush afterwards and a lady with head injuries.”

Police said seven people injured in the collision were taken to hospital, including the 20-year-old who later died. Five people are still being treated for serious injuries. A 23-year-old man who sustained minor injuries was released from hospital.

The incident occurred several hundred metres west of Old Trafford football ground and south of the ship canal by MediaCity in Salford where the BBC and ITV have studios.

Ch Supt Wayne Miller said: “First and foremost our thoughts are with the victims and their families at this very difficult time.”

“On the arrival of emergency services, they were faced with a horrific scene and a number of casualties, and it was declared a major incident. While we have made two arrests, we are keeping an open mind in terms of what has happened.

“There were approximately 60 vehicles there last night and I would appeal to those people that were there to come forward with information or with dashcam footage or footage from their mobile phones to support the investigation.”
