Ghatkopar man kills wife, stabs self during tiff

Accused to be arrested after discharge from hospital: police

Mumbai: A Ghatkopar resident allegedly stabbed his wife to death before killing himself at their residence on Thursday morning. The accused, identified as Shivshankar Vishwakarma (42), is being treated for his injuries, police said. They added that he has been booked and will be arrested on discharge from the hospital.

Police said the incident occurred around 6.45 a.m. on Thursday in Ramabai Colony. Mr. Vishwakarma and his wife Chandrakala (40) had been facing marital problems for several years. Senior PI Rohini Kale, Pant Nagar police station, said, “There would be frequent fights. Around 15 days ago, when they were in their hometown, Chandrakala's relatives had asked him to stop troubling her and work towards a peaceful marriage. This angered the accused. On Thursday morning, he picked a fight with her, accusing her of belittling him before her relatives.”

As the altercation grew more heated, Mr. Vishwakarma grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed Chandrakala in the throat, and then stabbed himself in the stomach. The commotion attracted the attention of their neighbours. On finding the couple bleeding on the floor, they took them to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar, where Chandrakala was declared ‘dead before admission’, officers said.

By the time the police reached the hospital, the accused had received medical attention and was said to be in a stable condition by doctors. After recording statements from neighbours and relatives, Mr. Vishwakarma was booked for murder under the IPC section 302. “The accused will be placed under arrest as soon as he is discharged from hospital,” Ms. Kale said.
