VADODARA: Complaints of a gastroenteritis outbreak in Navayard area kept the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) on its toes on Friday. While a local councillor claimed that around 300 cases were reported, VMC officials said that 43 persons had been affected.
Cases of diarrhoea and vomiting had been trickling in since the last couple of days, but the situation became grim on Friday. Local councillor from the opposition Congress party Pushpa Waghela said that she had taken up the issue with the civic body on multiple occasions, but to no avail.

Waghela said that the cases of diarrhoea and vomiting were reported in the Ashapuri, Navi Ashapuri, Sarasvatinagar, Ramwadi, Navi Ramwadi, Thakorkrupa and nearby localities. She pointed out that medical teams of the civic body had identified around 300 cases of people having taken ill in the localities. She said that apart from these there were several other persons who had gone for treatment in private hospitals.

VMC officials, however, said that in all 41 cases of mild diarrhoea and two others of diarrhoea with vomiting had come to light in the area. They said that health workers had conducted extensive door-to-door visits in the area in wake of the situation.

“They have given oral rehydration solution packets and chlorination tablets to the residents of the area. Samples of water from the localities have also been collected and sent to the public health laboratory for testing,” said VMC additional medical officer Dr Mukesh Vaidya.

In a letter to the VMC commissioner, Waghela has also demanded that work on a new drainage line in the area should be completed at the earliest. She has also sought that the ward officer of the area should be changed as he officer was not keeping well since quite some time and was unable to attend office regularly.
