Vadodara: The city cybercrime cell has won its first ‘cyber cop’ award for cracking a case of girl’s harassment by a person from Uttar Pradesh.
The award was jointly by Gujarat director general of police (DGP) and State Crime Records Bureau was given to the city police for the month of April. Senior police officials said that the award constituted by the police department some time ago to appreciate the efforts put in by the cops.
“The girl, who is complainant, had approached us earlier this year and filed a complaint. She said that someone had opened an Instagram account in her name and posted her photographs on it. She had learnt about it from her relatives,” said Ajaysinh Gohil, PSI, cybercrime cell.
“We immediately began investigations and contacted Instagram authorities for getting details of that account. The Instagram authorities sent us a phone number from which the account was opened. We tracked down the number and found out that it was registered in the name of a man staying in Lucknow,” Gohil told TOI.
A team was sent a team to UP and they arrested the accused identified as Vindya Shakti Anand. The 24-year-old is a law student of Ram Manohar Lohia University. He was in relationship with the girl in the past when she too was in UP. After she moved to Vadodara, Anand wanted to continue with the relationship. When she refused, he decided to blackmail her by posting her photos and videos on the fake Instagram account he had created.
“We seized his laptop and mobile phone to ensure that he doesn’t keep any more photos and videos that may have gone viral online,” Gohil added.
