Why Facebook's killing its trending topics

[MUSIC] Facebook found that the trending news News feature only got about 1.5% of clicks to all news publishers on Facebook. That's very low, and it turns out people use it even less over time. And so considering how much trouble it was, and you may remember the political controversies it had, they just decided it wasn't worth it anymore. [MUSIC] A lot of the concerns around trending topics were around conservative voices And a lot of the, we'll call it fake news, false news, conspiracy theories, whatever you want. There were concerns that Facebook was silencing conservative voices and conservative publications, there was a story out by Gizmodo that said as much based on the talking to the team And then there were also concerns that once Facebook tried to fix that, that they ended up promoting stuff like conspiracy theories, and it all became really rather of a mess. [BLANK_AUDIO] What is comes down to is that if I can't trust the trending topics. Feed from one of the world's largest companies that is delivering a lot of the other news I rely upon, then why should I be using this? And I think that's where Facebook realized too. If they can't really nail this down and make it something trustworthy, then maybe it's not worth it anymore. So you're still gonna be able to get news through Facebook. Don't worry. You'll be able to share news with each other, and you'll also be able to click like on publishers, like c|net, and get news in your feed that way. It's just that the trending topics specifically that feature that was on the right side of Facebook is gonna go right away.
