Next One-Off Rolls-Royce Could Be Dubbed ‘Boat Tail’

A recent trademark by BMW may offer a hint as to what the next one-off Rolls-Royce will be named.

Auto Guide recently discovered a trademark application for ‘Boat Tail’ with the European Union Intellectual Property Office that was recently filed by BMW.

Obviously, the term ‘Boat Tail’ makes no obvious reference to any vehicles from the Germany manufacturer. However, the similarities between Boat Tail and the bespoke Rolls-Royce Sweptail are obvious.

Admittedly, Boat Tail is nowhere near as evocative as Sweptail but it could be fitting if a wealthy collector wants to create a bespoke Rolls with a rear end inspired by luxury boats and yachts.

Rolls-Royce sees a market for bespoke models

Upon unveiling the Rolls-Royce Sweptail last year, a car reportedly worth over $10 million, Rolls-Royce chief executive Torsten Muller-Otvos said the British marque is interested in developing additional one-offs.

“For me, the future of luxury is that you have to get more and more bespoke. People in this segment want to have something extremely special, something significantly different from what their friend has,” Muller-Otvos said.

Creating the Sweptail took the British marque four long years, largely due to the lengthy process of meeting homolgation. Immediately after the car was released, however, Rolls-Royce received calls from customers looking to be involved in the next bespoke project.
