In Axton, Abby Ranson scored in the 70th minute for what proved to be the deciding goal and Appomattox edged Radford 2-1 to claim the Region 2C girls soccer championship at Smith River Sports Complex.

Ranson, who assisted on Taylor Fulcher’s goal in the 10th minute, scored off a Samantha Paulette assist to give the Raiders (20-0) a 2-0 lead.

Radford (16-3) answered seven minutes later on Madison Page’s unassisted goal, but the Bobcats were unable to muster another scoring opportunity.

Savannah Totty stopped seven shots for Appomattox, while Emma Minnick recorded seven saves for Radford.

The Raiders will host Gate City on Tuesday in the Class 2 quarterfinals.

BOYS SOCCER

Giles 4, Nelson 0

In Axton, the Spartans scored all of their goals in the second half to knock off the Governors in the Region 2C championship match at Smith River Sports Complex.

Michael Shelor scored twice for Giles. Matthew Shelord and Mason Spiegel also scored for the Spartans.

Nelson will play at either Virginia High or Graham in the Class 2 quarterfinals Tuesday.

CLASS 4 TENNIS

E.C. Glass’ boys and girls tennis teams had their respective seasons end in the Class 4 quarterfinals Friday.

The boys fell to Riverside 6-0 at Fairfax Racquet Club. All of the singles matches were won in straight sets.

“It was a disappointing end to the season,” E.C. Glass coach Mike Fuqua said.

The girls lost 5-0 at John Handley. Glass’ No. 1 Megan Knight was leading Meredith Watts 7-5, 4-3 when the deciding point was claimed by the Judges.
