Tuscarawas County Sheriff's deputies and their K-9 unit searched for hours but found no one after a report of shots fired and a man running into the woods at about 5:18 p.m. Thursday.
Deputy Bob Mecomonaco said a resident of Church Road at Smith Hill Road, about three miles southeast of Newcomerstown, reported she heard a shot fired from a neighbor's house. She saw a man running across her yard and heard some words exchanged between him and her neighbor. Another shot was fired as the man ran into the woods.
The shooter ran away on foot, and the neighbors left in vehicles while deputies were en route.
Mecomonaco arrived at about 5:40 p.m., along with Sgt. Ed Jones, K-9 Deputy Mike Creager, and Deputies Rick Morrison and Lincoln Troyer. They searched and the search dog tracked the possible shooter for about 20 minutes, but officers were unable to locate anyone.
Officers never found any blood or any indication that anyone had been hit by the fired shots.
None of the people at the house returned, and officers cleared the scene at 7:55 p.m.
Mecomonaco said he will continue investigating to see who was involved and what happened.
