CEDAR RAPIDS — Angela Beik, a former Linn-Mar High School nurse accused of having sex with a 16-year-old student, pleaded not guilty this week and her trial is set for September 24, in Linn County District Court.
Beik, 46, made her not guilty plea in writing Tuesday to one count of sexual exploitation by a school employee. She was fired from her position with the school district April 9.
Cedar Rapids police started an investigation after receiving reports March 19 that Beik had sex with and received explicit messages from a 16-year-old student.
Cedar Rapids police has worked with Marion police and the Linn County Attorney’s Office during the investigation.
The sexual misconduct with the student came to light when Beik told two nurses at UnityPoint-St. Luke’s Hospital, where she was also employed, about her relationship with the teen, according to court documents.
As mandatory reporters, the nurses contacted the Iowa Department of Human Services and their supervisors.
A search warrant affidavit shows Beik told the St. Luke’s nurses that she had a “make out session” with a Linn-Mar student in October 2017 and then had sexual contact with the teen in March 2018, which she reportedly “described in great detail.”
Human Services opened an investigation of Beik “on or about” March 18, according to the affidavit, and then Marion police obtained her phone.
Beik was placed on administrative leave and then terminated from the hospital, a hospital spokesperson said in April.
Beik had worked at Linn-Mar since August 2016 and was placed on paid leave March 20, Superintendent Quintin Shepherd said in April.
She remains free on bail pending trial. If convicted, she faces up to five years in prison.
