Fire in Income Tax office at Scindia House in Mumbai; six rescued from upper floors

The fire started around 4:50 pm on the third floor of the Scindia House building that houses the Income Tax office and the Debt Recovery Tribunal

A fire broke out at the Income Tax office at Scindia House in south Mumbai on Friday. No casualties have been reported so far.

The fire started around 4:50 pm on the third floor of the building, a Fire Brigade official said. It has been confined to the third and fourth floors of the building that houses government offices at the Ballard Estate. The building has six storeys.

Six people were rescued from the upper floors and the terrace, said chief fire officer PS Rahangdale. “A man was stuck on the second floor. We have rescued him safely,” he said.

Eight fire engines and 6 tankers are at the spot, fighting the fire.

The building, a well-known landmark in South Mumbai, also houses the office of the Debt Recovery Tribunal .

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, a Fire Brigade official said.
