Thangappa passes away

He won the award in 2012 for translating Love Stands Alone

Sahitya Akademi award winner M.L. Thangappa died on Thursday. He was 84.

His body has been donated to the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer). Mr. Thangappa was born on March 8, 1934, in Kurumbalaperi in Tirunelveli district. His father Madanpandian was a Tamil teacher. Thangappa is survived by wife Visalakshi and two children.

Bilingual writer

A bilingual writer, he started writing at the age of 17 and has written nearly 50 books. He moved to Puducherry in 1959 and taught Tamil at Tagore Arts College.

He also worked as a professor in Bharathidasan Government College for Women. Thangappa retired from service in 1994. He won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2012 for translating Love Stands Alone written by AR Venkatachalapathy. He has translated the works of Ramalinga Swamigal, Subramania Bharati and Bharathidasan to English, apart from the Sangam era poetry.
