Little survivor Ayan is all set to go to school

He weighed just 500 gm at birth

A newborn baby weighing just about 500 gm has little chance of survival. But four years later, when little Mohammed Ayan is all set to go to school on Friday along with his friends, his parents thank divine providence and doctors and nurses who cared for him during his critical phase in life.

At a press meet here on Thursday, the Lourdes Hospital authorities gave details about the boy born to autorickshaw driver Shihab and Sheeba, who was third time pregnant in 2014.

Her pregnancy was complicated, and doctors had to operate her to take out the baby to save her life. The foetus was only six months old in the womb.

When Ayan came into the world, he had a severe respiratory problem and had to be shifted to the intensive newborn critical care. Neonatal ventilator, incubator, nutrition therapy, and other critical care procedures helped the baby survive. The baby’s internal organs had yet to be fully developed. It was a great challenge for nurse Smitha and neonatologist Rojo Joy to take care of the baby and make him fit to come out of the ICU.

Later, the mother and the baby continued in an isolated condition at home for around a year. The hospital authorities, doctor, staff of the neonatal ICU supported Shihab to take care of the baby. They also extended financial help to him.
