HYDERABAD: After days of battling extreme heat, residents heaved a sigh of relief on Thursday, as sudden showers accompanied with thunderstorm and gusty winds lashed parts of the city. While meteorologists attributed the sudden downpour to formation of cumulonimbus clouds and not to the onset of southwest monsoon, the showers brought the temperature down to 40.1 degree Celsius by evening .

Over the last few days, city's average temperature has been hovering around 40-42 degree Celsius. According to meteorologists, this rise in temperature led to formation of rain bearing clouds over the city. "In the past few days, the maximum temperature touched 42.5 degree Celsius. The warm, moist air rises and cools, eventually condensing into rain bearing clouds," said Raja Rao, meteorologist at the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, that issued thunderstorm warning for some districts over next two days.

"Thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Jaya Shankar Bhupalapalle, Warangal, Jangaon, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Khammam and Badradri Kothagudem of Telangana," read the IMD warning.

Although rainfall activity will continue for the next few days, weathermen claim that southwest monsoon will enter Telangana only by June 5.

"Conditions are likely to become favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some parts of south Peninsula around June 3, with the likely development of favourable circulation features leading to increase of rainfall over interior TN, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana," read the forecast issued by IMD, New Delhi.
