A Tipton woman faces a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the 1992 bludgeoning death of a West Liberty man.
Annette D. Cahill, 55, is expected to make an initial appearance at 9 a.m. in Muscatine County District Court. She faces the charge in connection with the death of Corey Wieneke, 22, of rural West Liberty.
Wieneke was found dead in his rural West Liberty home on the evening of Oct. 13, 1992. He died of blunt trauma to the body, according to Gazette archive articles.
The aluminum softball bat was discovered by a television news reporter on the gravel road leading to Wieneke’s home on the morning of Oct. 14. The bat was later identified as being the murder weapon.
According to the criminal complaint filed with the State of Iowa, Annette Cahill was in a relationship with Weineke and admitted to going to the Weineke residence during the day of his death, but denied seeing him.
In 2017, a witness came forward to investigators and stated that a few weeks after Weineke’s murder, Cahill made statements that she was responsible for killing Weineke.
Cahill offered conflicting accounts of her whereabouts during the early morning hours of October 13, 1992, the day investigators believe the murder was committed.
Cahill made a statement to another individual that Weineke had been killed by being struck with a baseball bat, before that information had been known to investigators, and before the murder weapon had been recovered by law enforcement.
Additional details are expected to be released today.
Conviction on a first-degree murder charge carries a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
