Burglars are using stolen credit cards to book accommodation at homes throughout Christchurch before stripping them bare, police say.

Detective Sergeant Colin Baillie said police were investigating six burglaries made through popular accommodation websites this week. Stuff understands the sites include Airbnb, Booking.com and Bookabach.

"The offenders are booking properties through these sites using stolen credit cards, turning up and stripping them bare, taking everything from lounge suites and bedding to whiteware."

Baillie said there were several steps people could take to keep their property safe, including meeting with, or having an agent meet with, renters and viewing their photo identification.

"Many local sites do these checks for you, however, some large, international sites don't offer that service. In that case, we urge property owners to make the checks themselves and ensure renters are who they say they are.

"You're essentially opening your door to strangers so make sure you have the right measures in place to protect your investment."

Baillie said inquiries into the burglaries were ongoing.

Anyone with information was asked to call Christchurch police on 03 363 7400 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
