John Caroll hosted more than 500 high school football players on June 1 at its “Light Up The Land” camp.

Among the area highlights at the JCU camp were:

• Perry senior-to-be Jacob Allen, who has put on 25 pounds since his junior year of football ended and is now 6-foot-2, 220 pounds.

Allen is camping June 16 at Michigan State and June 18 at Bowling Green, then will be part of Perry’s 7-on-7 tour that includes stops at Toledo, Notre Dame and Tennessee.

• Euclid had nearly 40 players on hand at the JCU camp.

• Longtime area coach Tom Gibbons arrived with the Willoughby South contingent. He has coached the last few years at Lake Catholic, but said he has joined coach Matt Duffy’s program this year.

• In the shuttle races at the JCU camp, the skilled position portion had a notable flavor to it. Finishing in the top three, timewise, were Joey Torok of Kirtland (first), Luke Floriea of Mentor (second) and Zack Dixon of Brush (third).

• Speaking of Kirtland, senior-to-be Jack Bailey is now up to 6-foot-4, 300 pounds. He played his junior year at about 270 pounds.

Bailey is planning a camp in the near future to Kent State, which as of now is the only FBS school to offer a scholarship, something that is likely to change in the near future.
