A total of 14 judges were today appointed to three high courts in one of the largest sets of fresh nominations in the higher judiciary in the recent past, the law ministry said.
While seven additional judges were appointed to the Madras High Court, two were appointed to the Karnataka High Court and five judges to the Madhya Pradesh High Court, it said.
The approved strength of the Madras High Court is 75, but it is functioning with 56 judges -- a shortfall of 19.
Similarly, the Madhya Pradesh High Court is short of 22 judges as its working strength is 31 as against the approved strength of 53.
The approved strength of the Karnataka High Court is 62, whereas its working strength is 29.
The 24 high courts in the country have an approved strength of 1079, but are doing with 659 judges -- a combined shortage of 420 as on June 1, according to law ministry data.
