A fire broke out at Countryside Recycling in Carrollton.
CARROLLTON Firefighters from several department extinguished a blaze at Countryside Recycling which spread to a heap of scrap automobiles Thursday afternoon.
Firefighters from the Carrollton Fire Department responded about 2:30 p.m. Thursday to the scrap yard business at 1236 Lincoln Ave. NW.
"It was a large pile of scrap automobiles," Assistant Chief Bill Wells said. "How it started, no one knows. They heard a bang, saw a spark and it spread to the automobiles."
Wells identified the owner of the business as Brian Shuman. Firefighters from 10 departments responded. There were 76 first responders at the scene.
Because some of the vehicles still had fuel tanks attached, the flames caused explosions.
"Thank God we didn't have any injuries," Wells said.
Lincoln Avenue had to be closed to traffic while firefighters battled the blaze. The fire did not reach any structures on the property.
"It was all contained in the scrap metal," Wells said. "He (the owner) said between 300 and 400 cars."
