June 1 (UPI) -- Childish Gambino's newest single "This is America" has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Gambino, the rap persona of actor Donald Glover, released the song and an accompanying music video in May when it went viral for its politically-charged message. The song debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart.

The platinum certification comes as the track has sold 1 million equivalent units by tallying how many times the song has been streamed. One digital song sale is equal to 150 audio or video streams.

"This is America" has been streamed over 147 million times with the music video gaining over 220 million views on YouTube and counting.

Gambino's biggest hit of his career remains "Redbone" which has been certified four-times platinum.

Gambino is set to go on tour starting in September.
