The city is warning trailgoers to keep an eye out for falling trees and rocks after recent heavy rain, according to a city of Lynchburg news release.
Rain has damaged trails along the streams where much of the city’s trail system is located. Flowing water has exposed tree roots and carved out the soil in between rocks that act as a mortar holding them in place. High winds that often accompany afternoon and evening thunderstorms could topple the already weakened and top-heavy trees.
The city said two trees recently fell on the Ruskin Freer Interpretive Loop Trail near Interpretive Marker 10–11 and 12.
The city asks hikers to return home or to their cars if they hear a thunderstorm approaching while on a trail.
