Indoor stadium to have more facilities

The indoor stadium built on six-acre land at Mundayad here is being expanded with more facilities, including a boxing hall, being constructed behind the existing stadium building, which was the venue for holding wrestling and basketball events of the last National Games.

The Sports and Youth Affairs Department has given administrative sanction for the project for developing the boxing hall estimated at ₹98 lakh.

The indoor stadium, now managed by the District Sports Council (DSC), was envisaged as a full-fledged sports complex with more sports facilities for conducting national-level sports events. The indoor stadium constructed at a cost of ₹29 crore was commissioned in January 2015.

It was built on a plot that formed part of the 16 acres of land handed over by the Animal Husbandry Department for developing the proposed Sports Complex.

“The proposal to construct a warming up area at the indoor stadium land was not considered at the time of its construction because of financial constraints,” said DSC president O.K. Vineesh.

The warming up area will be included in the hall being built now for holding boxing, wrestling and iron games events, he said adding that works would be started in August and completed in 10 months.

Other proposals

The indoor stadium has a seating capacity of 3,000 people. The proposals for further developing the indoor stadium into a major sports facility in the region include an Olympic-size swimming pool near the multi-purpose indoor stadium and synthetic tennis court, among others.
