Mentally unstable man lives with father’s body for 3 days

Body spotted by tenant of deceased after it started to decompose, smell

A 34-year-old man was found living with his 65-year-old father’s body at their Chander Vihar home in outer Delhi’s Nihal Vihar, police said on Wednesday. They said Satpal Singh is suspected to have died nearly three days ago.

Daughters informed

Satpal’s two daughters told the police that their brother Karamjeet is mentally unstable. Karamjeet allegedly did not inform anyone about their father’s death, despite the body starting to decompose and smell foul.

The matter came to light on Monday evening.

A family which lives on rent on the ground floor of the building owned by the deceased noticed the stench and went to check on the father and son on the first floor.

The tenant told the police that he initially thought the stench was a result of a dead rat.

He searched his flat for the dead rodent and then went upstairs to check on the landlord.

“He said the stench grew stronger as he reached outside Satpal’s flat. He knocked on the door, which was opened by Satpal’s son Karamjeet. The tenant then spotted his landlord’s semi-decomposed body on the sofa,” said a police officer.

The tenant raised an alarm and alerted the neighbours. The neighbours initially thought the son had murdered his father.

The police control room was informed. A team reached the spot and took the body to a nearby hospital. Doctors told the police that 65-year-old had died almost 72 hours ago.

When Karamjeet was questioned, he told the police that his father was sleeping and had not eaten anything since the past three days. Karamjeet said he tried to wake up his father but the latter did not respond.

The police said some empty biscuit packets and bread were lying in the room. Earlier when the policemen were taking Satpal’s body to the hospital, Karamjeet asked them not to disturb his father.

Karamjeet is unmarried and unemployed. He has two sisters. Both his sisters are married and live with their families in west Delhi.

Karamjeet was handed over to his sisters, after they were informed about the incident.

Natural death

Preliminary autopsy report has suggested that Satpal died due to natural causes, said the police.
