The Nissan GT-R is starting to show its age but the company has a history of introducing updates to the high-performance model. That same philosophy carries over to the GT-R Nismo GT3 as the automaker has announced a series of improvements to the 2018 model.

Currently available to order, the latest customer racing car has optimized weight distribution and a lower center of gravity. This is possible thanks to a decision to place the car’s twin-turbo 3.8-liter V6 engine – which produces more than 543 hp (405 kW / 550 PS) and 469 lb-ft (637 Nm) of torque – lower and 150mm (5.9 inches) further back than before.

Besides moving the engine, Nissan developed a new suspension for improved vehicle dynamics. The company also increased the GT-R’s torsional and flexural rigidity and installed a new cross member. Last but not least, the car has been equipped with upgraded brakes that promise to have “increased durability and reliability.”

While the GT-R Nismo GT3 was designed for racing, the 2018 model will be available with an optional air conditioning system. Nissan says the A/C unit was designed exclusively for the car and will help to make the model more comfortable during long endurances races.

The modifications might sound minor but Nissan says the car has “enhanced competitiveness” while still being “easy to handle for both professional and gentleman drivers.” The company went on to say goal was to create a race car that took “advantage of all of the GT-R’s strengths and was capable of running with stability and speed at any circuit and on any brand of tire.”

The Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 is built-to-order and the first deliveries are expected to begin in January. Japanese pricing starts at ¥60,000,000 ($551,580).
