RANCHI: The Ranchi office of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued a thunder squall alert with lightning and wind-speeds up to 60 kilometers an hour across Jharkhand in the next three days.

In a statement issued at noon, the Ranchi IMD issued thunder-squall alert in isolated places in central, southern, northeast and northwestern districts. “Thunder-squall with wind speeds up to 60 kilometers an hour likely at isolated places on June 1 (Friday). Thunderstorms with gusty winds up to 40 kilometers an hour is likely to occur at isolated places on June 2 and June 3,” it said.

Thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds and lightning wrecked havoc in Ranchi and different parts of the state earlier this week. Lightning killed 26 people statewide and paralyzed electricity and water supply in Ranchi for three days, leaving over 10 lakh people of the city in discomfort.

Weathermen attributed the change in weather to an upper air cyclonic circulation over central Madhya Pradesh and neighborhood and its trough line that ran over Bihar up to Uttar Pradesh.

An officer in Ranchi IMD said thundershowers are expected to continue in Jharkhand in the run up to monsoon. With the southwest monsoon already setting in three days before its schedule in Kerala, weathermen here are hopeful of timely onset of monsoon in Jharkhand in the second week of June.
