Saskatoon police received a report of a man walking with a weapon on Tuesday evening, but it took support from the skies, a foot chase and an assist from some members of the public before the suspect was arrested.

A 30-year-old man is now facing charges of resisting arrest, carrying a concealed weapon, carrying a weapon dangerous to the public and breach of undertaking. He was also arrested on outstanding warrants.

Patrol officers were dispatched to 22nd Street W. and Betts Avenue at 7:40 p.m. CST on the Tuesday evening, after getting the report of a man walking with a weapon.

The police's Air Support Unit found the suspect, and guided ground units to his location. Based on the information, a lone patrol officer discovered the suspect.

The officer exited his vehicle, and asked the man to stop, but instead, the suspect fled, according to police.

The officer then gave chase, with the pair crossing over 22nd Street and into a ditch. The officer reached the suspect as he attempted to get over a fence.

The pair fought, with the suspect "exhibiting extremely aggressive behaviour," according to police, who said he was believed to be under the influence of an intoxicant.

Members of the public stepped in to help the officer subdue the suspect. A second knife also was found in the midst of the fight.

No one was seriously injured.

Saskatoon Police thanked those who supported the officer in making the arrest, but added that police do not encourage members of the public to put themselves into dangerous situations.
