The aquatic attraction and research center in northern Flagler County is celebrating its 80th anniversary, beginning today with the reopening of the iconic arch at the front entrance on State Road A1A. The park opened in 1938 as Marine Studios and became a popular shooting location for movies — including “Creature from the Black Lagoon” and its sequel, “Revenge of the Creature,” which still air often on TV.
As part of the month-long festivities, Marineland will pay tribute to his Hollywood connections every Saturday in June by showing a different movie that was produced at the park. Some of the cast and crew of the films will there to talk about their experiences.
Before The Mouse and The Orca established residency in Florida, Marineland was once one of the state’s top tourist attractions, offering visitors the chance to view marine life up close under water and see trained dolphins. Over the years it expanded its mission with research facilities and educational classes. In 2011 it became part of the Georgia Aquarium, and serves as a place where scientists study sea life and work on conservation efforts.
Marineland today represents a connection to Florida’s past while remaining relevant to its present and future. It’s one of those neat things that contribute to the local culture. Here’s to 80 more successful years.
