ABC canceled Roseanne on Tuesday after the show's star, head writer and executive producer Roseanne Barr tweeted a racist remark about Valerie Jarrett, a former senior advisor to President Obama. While everyone from Tom Arnold to President Trump has sounded off with their opinion on the cancellation and Barr's comment, some of the people involved with the show are choosing to stay quiet. Laurie Metcalf, who played Roseanne Conner's sister Jackie, has not commented, and John Goodman, who played Roseanne's husband Dan, explained his decision to not speak on the scandal when a reporter tracked him down at an auto repair shop in New Orleans.
"It's not that I disrespect you guys, I just -- I would rather say nothing than to cause more trouble," Goodman said in a video obtained by Entertainment Tonight via paparazzi firm The Mega Agency.
Asked about rumors of a possible Roseanne spin-off with him, Metcalf and Sara Gilbert, Goodman had no information, saying "you've heard more than me." In fact, Goodman said he hasn't been following the news of the controversy and the cancellation. But he did say that, for him, "everything's fine."

Goodman also shrugged off ABC abandoning its Emmy campaign for the show, saying, "I wasn't gonna get an Emmy anyway." The 11-time Emmy nominee continued, "I've been up there 12 times already, and if I didn't get one by now, I'm not gonna get one." Goodman actually has won an Emmy, for guest starring on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, but never for Roseanne, for which he received seven straight nominations.
Other members of Goodman's TV family have condemned Barr's comment, including Sara Gilbert, who said "Roseanne's recent comments about Valerie Jarrett, and so much more, are abhorrent and do not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show. I am disappointed in her actions to say the least."
Barr's other TV daughter Lecy Goranson said that while she was "devastated" by Roseanne's cancellation, "more devastating are the effects of hate speech and racism on individuals and society. Thank you for your support. And, in the spirit of our amazing crew, spread love not hate!" Michael Fishman, the third Conner child, condemned Barr's remark in a thoughtful statement, to which Barr responded that he "threw [her] under the bus."
