Improvements have been 'limited' at existing facility

The Greyhound bus station in downtown Albany has seen just "limited improvements" as it waits to be replaced. But how quickly that might happen isn't clear.
"Based on discussions over the last several years about the possibility of relocating, there have been limited improvements made to the facility," said Greyhound spokeswoman Lanesha Gipson. "We remain hopeful and open to relocating to a new and modern intermodal (station) in the near future."
The current bus station, opened around 1973 and owned by Greyhound, is on Hamilton Street in an area once planned for a convention center and hotel complex. But now that a scaled-down complex has been built several blocks away, local officials are looking at ways to redevelop the large parcel of parking lots, several rundown buildings, and the Greyhound station.
"This is a critical area in downtown Albany," said Sarah Reginelli, president of Capitalize Albany, the city's economic development arm, in an April interview with the Times Union's Madison Iszler. "There is so much potential for this site. It isn't very often that there's an area like this in a large city."
And while Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan said in that same story that she's talked with Capital District Transportation Authority CEO Carm Basile about a multimodal center at the Greyhound building, it's not clear how quickly such a project might happen.
Basile said last week that whatever is planned for the surrounding area would have to be compatible with what is planned for the bus station. All the transportation providers — intercity and intracity — would be under one roof, with the goal of improving mobility for passengers.
"It is still part of our long-term planning process," he said.
CDTA operates the rail stations in Rensselaer and Saratoga Springs, both of which are newer with more amenities for passengers.
Basile said CDTA wants to make the Greyhound experience compatible.
