BBC weather forecast: VICIOUS thunderstorms to rage across Britain reveals Carol Kirkwood
UK WEATHER is threatening to cause major travel disruptions for commuters today as BBC Breakfast meteorologist Carol Kirkwood predicted torrential downpours and extreme thunderstorms across the country.
Powerful downpours egged on by fierce winds threaten widespread road closures and travel mayhem as storms sweep in from the near continent.
“There’s a lot of cloud around and there’s also some dense fog, particularly so across the south eastern quarter of the UK and some tricky travel conditions,” Carol Kirkwood said.
“But most of that will thin and break through the course for the day and push back towards the North Sea. Then what we have is some thundery weather coming in across the south east to start with and pushing a bit further north and west,” she added.
Turbulent weather will strike today with vicious thunderstorms, torrential downpours and localised flooding on the agenda.
Areas worst hit include southern parts of the UK, where heavy showers threaten commuters and could cause severe disruptions.

However, there will be some warm sunshine in parts of the country, but mainly wet and thundery for most Britons.
This morning rain will ravage across southern Britain, some heavy and thundery at times.
Meanwhile, a few showers from the south east will edge further and further before becoming more widespread.
Scotland and Northern Ireland will remain relatively dry, but mist and fog is possible in the early hours of the day.
The most intense thunderstorms are likely to be in the south east, Midlands, East Anglia, Wales and the south west.

There will also be a lot of lightning strikes and plenty of rain.
Where there is sunshine it will feel muggy and warm, temperatures in the south east could soar as high as 23 degrees celsius.
The rumble and thunder is going to continue overnight and there will be a few more showers lingering across Wales and parts of the Midlands.
Friday will start off cloudy for most before the sun comes out and then some showers will appear, particularly in western areas.
Risk of showers in the north on Saturday, but fewer showers in England and Wales to make way for more sunshine.
