The 5th District Republican Committee on Thursday released an early list of potential nominees to replace Rep. Tom Garrett, R-Buckingham, on the November ballot.
So far, seven people have emailed the committee to express interest in being nominated. They are: Martha Boneta, a farmer from Paris, Va.; Michael Del Rosso, who sought the nomination in 2016; Jim McKelvey, a Bedford County real estate developer; Va. Sen. Bryce Reeves, R-Spotsylvania; Denver Riggleman, owner of Silverback Distillery in Nelson County; Del. Michael Webert, R-Marshall; and Dale Woodson, a former candidate for Charlottesville City Council.
The committee asked all those interested in the nomination to email committee Chairman Melvin Adams by 8 p.m. Thursday, but said those who miss the deadline may still run.
The committee is set to meet at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Nelson County High School and is expected to select a nominee by committee vote. The meeting is open to the public.
The nominee will face Democrat Leslie Cockburn.
