His team has lost only once this season and Niskayuna boys' lacrosse coach Mike Vorgang watched his squad prevail by 14 goals Wednesday night. The veteran mentor came away from the Silver Warriors' 21-7 Class A regional victory over Kingston less than enamored with his squad's overall performance.

They were plenty of superlative stretches, yet there were also some subpar moments.

Vorgang has been trying to get his 2018 Niskayuna team to embrace being consistent. The Silver Warriors were once again unable to meet that one-word standard Wednesday.

Vorgang says his team has registered two complete games this season. Niskayuna senior midfielder Eoghan Sweeney thinks that number is lower.

"We didn't play our best game today," Sweeney said. "We need to stay consistent throughout the entire game. I don't think we have played a full four-quarter game this season. We've had games where we start slow and finish strong and others where we start fast and finish slow. We have to start strong and finish strong Saturday."

The Silver Warriors (18-1), ranked No. 8 in the state, will certainly need to raise their level Saturday when they take on Section I champion Mamaroneck. The ninth-ranked Tigers (16-4) beat Lakeland-Panas 16-9 Wednesday in the Section I title game.

The unranked Tigers (15-3) scrapped their way into a 3-3 deadlock with two goals from speedy sophomore Justin Longo and one by Kobi Buffa.

"They played really hard," Vorgang said of Kingston. "I knew they had four or five good offensive players that had skills and good feet, but we need to come out and match intensity every game we play. If we don't, sometimes, you are not going to be able to come back from it."

But in a show of its overall superiority, Niskayuna responded to adversity by reeling off four goals in 35 seconds, and six over the final 3:01 of the opening quarter, to secure a 9-3 advantage.

Sweeney scored twice seconds after winning the draw and finished with three goals.

"That's definitely a way to respond. (Sweeney) made it look very easy and it kind of got us rolling," Vorgang said.

Niskayuna extended its lead to 15-4 by halftime and running time was utilized during the fourth quarter.

"There were definitely sections of the game where we played very well," Vorgang said. "It is getting too long into the season saying the same things to the guys. It has be consistent. The execution has to be better."

"We just have to start a little earlier," said Niskayuna attack Finn McCullough, who scored four goals. "Once we get to the big guys, we have to go sooner."
