Summer Jobs Teach Real-World Lessons

A cautionary tale from my brother’s house-painting gig.

The summer job, once as common among American teenagers as acne, is all but disappearing. This is a missed opportunity for today’s high schoolers, not just to earn money before college, but to learn about human nature.

I’m referring to the particular type of education that comes from studying one’s co-workers, specifically those with drastically different life experiences. Doing it well can be a huge advantage later in life. Take the case of my kid brother, Jack, who worked one summer in the 1980s as a house painter.
