Be on guard against intolerance: Governor

Kerala as a progressive society must be on guard against intolerance raising its ugly head in the form of honour killing, which was unheard of in the State, Governor P. Sathasivam has said.

Referring to the recent murder of a youth in Kottayam, he said the incident was a warning to all to think deeply about the degeneration of our own mindset. He was speaking at the valedictory function of the second anniversary celebrations of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government here on Wednesday.

Referring to the spate of political murders, he said true welfare also lay in the people’s right to live happily and without fear.

“The unending saga of political murders and clashes should remind us to be more vigilant in preventing political differences leading to murderous hatred,” he said. The Governor said he had seen how the Chief Minister had firmly condemned the instances of police inaction at a press conference earlier in the day.

“At the same time, he conveyed many things to mediapersons, sometimes with a smiling face,” he said.

Significant milestones

Commending the LDF government for the various progressive steps that it has taken over the past two years, he said that the government might have miles to go, but the milestones crossed were significant indicators of the right path chosen to follow.

“The credit certainly goes to the tireless efforts of our Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleagues, who deserve appreciation,” the Governor said.
