Sydney CBD fire: Construction site goes up in flames

A fire at a construction site saw workers evacuated and Sydney's morning CBD rush disrupted by traffic diversions today.

About 70 firefighters brought the blaze under control, after flames took hold of scaffolding at a building in the city's legal precinct on Macquarie Street.

Twenty workers evacuated from the 11-storey building opposite The Mint. There were no reports of injuries.

There were 12 fire trucks on the scene and firefighters attacked the fire from the outside and inside of the building.

The blaze began before 8am and Macquarie Street was closed between Prince Alfred and Hunter Street.

Norm Buckley from the NSW Fire Service said the building the fire climbed up was undergoing renovation.

"We have the fire under control now, pretty much extinguished. We will look for some burning spots there," he said.

"We will liaise obviously with the workers and the people in the building to try and determine some sort of cause. But it will take some time and we will be here for a number of hours yet."
