The round was different for the South Glens Falls softball team Tuesday, yet the result and the Bulldogs' vanquisher remained the same.
Averill Park, using a combined five-hitter from the duo of junior Jadyn Lee and senior Kylie Gavitt along with two runs produced by the bottom of the order, generated an impressive 2-1 Class A title victory over top-seeded South Glens Falls at the Luther Forest Complex.
"This feels great because they were here for revenge today," said Gavitt, a UConn-commit who recorded the final seven outs to earn the save. "They definitely wanted this game. I could not play them last year (because of injury). I wanted to beat them."
"This is very satisfying winning it as they were undefeated," Lee said.
The championship was the second straight for the Warriors (16-7) and third since 2015. The win by Averill Park also marked the sixth consecutive year a team from the Suburban Council captured the Class A title.
South Glens Falls (20-1), ranked No. 2 in the state, was seeking its first title since 2012. The Bulldogs, winners of 15 sectional titles and two state championships, advanced to their first final since 2013. South Glens Falls fell to Averill Park 5-3 in 10 innings as the No. 1 seed in the 2017 Class A semifinals.
South Glens Falls entered Tuesday's final having outscored foes 188-15. It also posted a 5-0 record vs. Suburban Council opposition (including a 6-3 win over 2018 Class AA champion Ballston Spa).
Averill Park scored twice with two outs in the second against South Glens Falls star Maddie Capozucca, the Foothills Council's Most Valuable Player. Jess Haskin, the Warriors' No. 8 hitter, delivered an RBI triple to right and Jess Farley followed with a run-scoring single to right.
Lee retired the first 10 batters she faced before allowing a single to Hannah Mosher.
South Glens Falls senior first baseball Celyna Shaw blasted a 1-1 pitch in the fourth for a solo home run to cut the Bulldogs' deficit in half.
Averill Park coach Ken Bailey pulled Lee for Gavitt with two outs in the fifth.
"I was really glad that I could do my job," Lee said. "I love when 'Ky' comes in. She brings the heat."
"We talked about it before the game. I recommended to coach that we start Jadyn," Gavitt said. "We are to very different pitchers. She can work them with different movement. I knew when I came in, it was up to me to bring my velocity."
