Tourism all set to witness major leap

A boom is expected in the tourism sector in Visakhapatnam in the near future with some major tourist attractions coming up on the beaches, improvement of tourist amenities, plan to revive heli-tourism and introduction of water sports.

While the AP Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) has provided basic amenities such as shacks, restaurants, toilets, cottages and changing rooms at some of the popular tourist attractions, Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) also has plans to draw more tourists through development of the beach front in a big way. “The TU 142 Aircraft Museum, which was inaugurated by President Ram Nath Kovind on Dec 7, 2017, has already attracted 4 lakh footfalls and generated revenue of ₹1.5 crore by March-end this year,” VUDA Vice-Chairman P. Basanth Kumar told The Hindu.

“The government has sanctioned ₹ 20 crore for provision of museum-related works at Kursura Submarine Museum. Our plan is to suspend the small aircraft, Sea Harrier, in the air and develop it as a unique tourist attraction.”

“VUDA also identified 1,300 acres on the Yarada Hill for development of a botanical garden, golf course and high-end villas and a star hotel. We have sent the proposal to the government for consideration. The Chief Minister, however, wanted greater focus on hotel rooms to attract tourists. A fresh DPR is being prepared with plans for more hotel rooms apart from the botanical garden and other proposals,” he said. APTDC is upgrading the facilities at its tourist cottages at Rushikonda. A new kutcha road has been developed around the Rushikonda Hill to provide a second approach to the beach. It had set up souvenir shops, parking space and a few other amenities at this popular beach in the past.

APTDC has also constructed four shacks at Yarada beach, another popular beach, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Toilets and children’s play equipment have been provided. Construction of toilets and provision of power connection are pending.

The cottages at Lammasingi (Lambasingi), well-known for its chilling temperatures in winter, are nearing completion and the facility is expected to be ready by August-end. The APTDC also has plans to construct four shacks at Erramatti Dibbalu. Basic amenities have been provided at Thadiguda Waterfall near Anantagiri in the Agency Area of the district.

The facilities, provided at a cost of ₹35 lakh, include: a viewpoint, steps to reach the water fall, safety railing and changing rooms.
