Shirley J. Beuter Zumwalt, 85, lifetime Iowa City-area resident, died Monday, May 28, 2018, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City under the compassionate care of hospice.
A gathering time for family and friends will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, June 1, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service. Private family burial services will be held at St. Mary's Cemetery in Solon. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in her memory to Iowa City Hospice. Shirley Jean Slach was born Nov. 30, 1932, in rural Johnson County, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Verna (LaRue) Slach. She attended and graduated from Solon High School with the Class of 1951. On June 16, 1951, she was united in marriage to Lawrence Beuter. Lawrence later died in 1967. Shirley later married Gordon Zumwalt on Jan. 8, 1972.
In addition to raising her family, Shirley enjoyed her work outside the home for many years at the former Iowa State Bank, and later at Kmart and in the Solon Community Schools. She was a member of both the Iowa City and Solon American Legion Auxiliary.
Her family includes her husband, Gordon; her son, Larry, and his wife, Margaret Beuter; granddaughters, Brooke Buxton (Grant) and Tiffany Beuter; three great-grandchildren, Kaleb, Teagan and Maren Buxton; and Gordon's family, sons, Gary Zumwalt and David Zumwalt; daughter, Ann Bengtson; grandchildren, Ashley Bengtson, Emily Zumwalt, Nathan Zumwalt and Joshua Zumwalt; great-grandchildren, Hannah and Luke Zumwalt; and numerous other family members.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Lawrence; an infant son and daughter; and siblings, Margaret Barclay, Joyce Springmire, Harold Slach, Cecil Slach and Don Slach.
