ALBANY — State Police held the 42nd annual memorial service and awards ceremony on Wednesday at the State Police Academy on Washington Avenue.

Since 1917, State Police have lost 141 members in the line of duty. This year, State Police recognized three troopers.

Trooper Michael J. Anson, a Colonie native, died Jan. 2, 2018, from cancer stemming from his assignment to the World Trade Center site following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Trooper Darryl J. Burroughs Sr. retired after 28 years of service on July 31, 2011. On May 25, 2016, Burroughs died away from an illness stemming from his assignment at the World Trade Center site.

Trooper Joel R. Davis was killed on July 9, 2017, when he was shot responding to a domestic disturbance.

State Police Superintendent George P. Beach II recognized 18 people and one Division unit for their work at the awards day ceremony.

Among them were Superintendent's Commendation Awards for two members of Troop G:

Trooper Jason A. Dutcher, who is assigned to Princetown, went to a fire on Broadway in Rotterdam on Nov. 4 and help evacuate the three-story building. He learned a man was still in a third-floor apartment, found him began to lead him down the stairs. The man, who State Police said was heavily intoxicated, ran back into the smoke-filled apartment before Dutcher physically removed him from the building.

Investigator Kevin E. Noto solved a cold case dating to May 15, 1995. The body of homicide victim Suzanne Nauman was found on the Schenectady Municipal Golf Course. Schenectady Police Department arrested a suspect a year later, but, citing a lack of evidence, the Schenectady County District Attorney's Office declined to prosecute. Noto began to renew the case in 2015 as part of the Troop G Major Crimes Unit and found resemblances to another 1995 Schenectady homicide. A suspect in that case, Stanley Maciag, was arrested for unrelated crimes and committed suicide in prison in 1997. Citing DNA evidence from the previous investigation and Maciag's living relatives, a search warrant allowed investigators to exhume Maciag's body. His DNA match showed Maciag was responsible for killing Suzanne Nauman.

Lt. Richard F. Anguish of Troop G earned the George M. Searle Memorial Award for being an organizer and leader of more than 30 State Police volunteers who helped construct and rebuild Albany homes as a part of Habitat for Humanity.  Anguish also organized a group of State Police personnel to build a ramp at the home of Trooper Michael Anson, who was suffering from a terminal illness because of exposure during his response to the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York City.
