The BCCI has finally approved the long-overdue pay hike for domestic match officials, who had been awaiting a revision for six years.

According to the minutes of a Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) meeting last month, accessed by The Hindu, the domestic umpires and match referees have received a 100 per cent pay hike, which will come into effect from the forthcoming domestic season.

The CoA had missed out on revising the officials’ fees recently when it announced a steep hike in player match fees. The issue was highlighted by The Hindu in March while interviewing Saba Karim, the former India wicket-keeper who is now General Manager — Cricket Operations.

The revision in remuneration will also make umpires more accountable. Umpiring standards have been a bone of contention for several years in domestic cricket. Even top Indian umpires were — to an extent — exposed during the just-concluded Indian Premier League.

Extension for Raman, Hirwani

W.V. Raman and Narendra Hirwani’s appointments as batting and bowling coach respectively at the National Cricket Academy — that expired on March 14 — have been given a three-month extension.

Despite the CoA instructing the BCCI to invite applications for new appointments — Raman and Hirwani will anyway be eligible to apply having performed commendably over the last couple of years — the BCCI is yet to advertise for the posts on its website.
