Restoration of Pallikaranai marsh to continue till 2023

Forest Minister tables policy note in Assembly

Restoration activities at the Pallikaranai marshland will continue till 2023 at a cost of ₹165.68 crore under the National Adaptation Fund for Climate Change, Forest Minister Dindigul C. Sreenivasan said.

According to the policy note tabled by the Minister in the Assembly on Tuesday, restoration activities such as habitat improvement, protection, research, monitoring, publicity and awareness has been undertaken at the marshland.

“The State government is committed to protect the Pallikaranai marshland, which is a unique fresh water swamp located within the Chennai Metropolitan area. The Conservation Authority of Pallikaranai Marshland has been constituted to monitor all the activities. An area of 690.65 ha is under the control of the Tamil Nadu Forest Department,” the policy note said.

The government also plans to continue its Massive Tree Planting programme by planting 70 lakh seedlings at 7,000 acres of degraded forests with an outlay of ₹22.46 crore.

According to the Minister, “63 lakh seedlings will be planted by the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department.”
