Goa is celebrating its Statehood Day today. People’s demand for full statehood was attained on 30th May, 1987, when Goa became India’s 25th state. Daman and Diu were separated from Goa and continue to be administered as a union territory.
Earlier, Goa was a union territory, namely, Goa, Daman and Diu for all administrative and governance considerations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has greeted the people on the occasion. In a tweet, he expressed hope that Goa will scale new heights of development in the coming years. The state-level programme was organised at the Goa Legislative Assembly Secretariat in Porvorim this afternoon. In his speech, speaker of the Goa legislative assembly Pramod Sawant said, the young generation should appreciate the occasion and identify the areas of development for the future. Several cultural events have been planned to mark the Goa Statehood Day across the state.
