Nothing says summer quite like an outdoor concert. And this year in particular, more and more seem to be popping up, mostly in the form of music series at venues around the region.
Over the weekend, the Sedalia Center launched its Summer Concert Series, which will benefit a different Bedford nonprofit each time it’s held, while Devils Backbone Brewing Company is kicking off its Music in the Blue Ridge series this Saturday, with Yarn, Dangermuffin and the ’77z hitting the stage.
Devils Backbone’s family-friendly festival — held each month through August — includes the live music, along with food trucks, pop-up beer tastings and a kids’ activity area with a view of the stage.
The brewery’s Nelson County neighbor, Bold Rock Hard Cider, also is upping its game with fun series like Movies & Groovies, which pairs movies and music, and a new collaboration with Valley Road Vineyards for the winery’s annual fundraiser Rock the Ridge.
A bit closer to home, Riverfront Park will get plenty of action this summer, via the Academy Center of the Arts’ Riverfront Park Concert Series and Cheers to the Weekend, organized by Jack “DJ Ed” Edma and his company, MG Productions.
Then, of course, we have the 2018 Lockn’ festival in August. It’s not a series, per say, but certainly one of our area’s biggest music events each year and worth mentioning. Headliners this year include Sheryl Crow, Blues Traveler, George Clinton & P-Funk, Dead & Co, Tedeschi Trucks Band and many, many more.
Here are some concert series to look for this summer; to keep up with other events, check out our calendars every week, in print and online at www.newsadvance.com/calendar.

Appomattox County
– Under the Oaks at Evergreen Lavender Farm is a concert series hosted by the Appomattox farm on select Sunday afternoons. Musicians perform on an outdoor stage under several centuries-old oak trees, and attendees are invited to bring food for a communal potluck held before the music starts.
The site is a house concert venue affiliated with The Folk Alliance International and cannot sell tickets for its events. Instead, owners Ken and Bonnie Swanson accept and request donations of a set price, which covers expenses and pays the performers, Bonnie Swanson told The Burg last summer. Seats also must be reserved in advance, and no walk-ins are allowed.
The 2018 series started last month and continues with House of Hamill this Sunday; Andrew Finn Magill and Dave Curley on July 1; The Olivarez Trio Sept. 9; and The Floorboards Sept. 30. Requested donations typically range from $10 to $20 per show.

Bedford County
– The Sedalia Center’s new Summer Concert Series, which kicked off Friday, features a different band and raises money for a Bedford County nonprofit each time.
The next show is scheduled for June 29, featuring Sam Austin & Silverline and raising money for the Big Island Fire Department.
From there, it continues with The Ruckus on July 20, with funds going to the Friends of Bedford County Animal Shelter; The Floorboards on Aug. 24 (a charity has not yet been named for that concert); and Sam Austin again on Sept. 14, to benefit Domestic Violence Services.
Gates open at 6 p.m., and the Sedalia Center website says the shows will wrap up around 10. Admission is $10 at the gate, a portion of which will go to that week’s designated nonprofit. Children 12 and younger get in free. Camping also is available at an additional cost.
Concessions, including Homestead Creamery, will be on site, as well as domestic and craft beers.
Nelson County
– Devils Backbone Brewing Company’s aforementioned Music in the Blue Ridge series — billed on DBB’s website as “celebrating the simple pleasures of summer” — begins this Saturday, with Yarn, Dangermuffin and the ’77z hitting the stage.
It continues July 7 with The Dickens, Three Sheets to the Wind and the Adrian Duke Project and concludes Aug. 4, with bands that will be announced next week.
Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the gate, which opens at 4:30 p.m. A portion of proceeds will go to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and its mission to preserve the beauty of the Appalachian Trail. Camping options also are available.
– The 3rd annual Rock the Ridge benefit concert, which raises money for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, begins at Nelson County’s Valley Road Vineyards, 9264 Critzers Shop Road, on Saturday, June 16, and continues from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 17, at Bold Rock Hard Cider.
On Saturday, performers include Red & the Romantics, a Charlottesville-based folk/Americana band, and Sally Rose and Erin Lunsford, who play a combination of rock, soul and funk. Sunday welcomes Chamomile & Whiskey and Canaan Cox to Bold Rock, which also will host a backyard BBQ and hog roast for attendees. Tickets are a suggested donation of $15 each day.

– Mountain music takes center stage during the Old Time Concert Series at Humpback Rocks Visitor Center, at milepost 5.8 in Afton — harkening back to a time when there was no radio or television in mountain living, according to the event listing, and “people told stories of hardships and comforts through the instruments they played, the movements of their dances and the lyrics of their songs.”
Bands perform on Sunday afternoons, usually twice a month. Harmony Hill is set to play this Sunday, followed by Farm Use String Band on June 17. Events extend into late September
