HSC results out in Maharashtra: Mumbai’s pass percentage dips to 84.57%

The pass percentage for the state board’s Class 12 Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations dipped by a percentage point in Maharashtra, as well as Mumbai region, the results announced on Wednesday revealed.

Of the 14.83 lakh students who appeared for the exams this year, 86% cleared it. Last year, of the 15.02 lakh students who appeared, the state registered a passing percentage of 87.14%

The state board has not been announcing the top scorers in HSC exams for the past few years, and colleges compile data individually to determine their top scorers.

Mumbai region, which has the highest number of candidates, including a large number of repeaters, was eighth among nine divisions, with a success rate of 84.57%. Last year, the region had performed slightly better, posting a pass percentage of 85.34%. Nashik region registered the lowest success rate of 83.67%.

As usual, the Konkan division, with the lowest number of candidates, secured the top position with a pass percentage of 93.93%, followed by Kolhapur (89.13%), Pune (87.39%), Aurangabad (87.09%), and Latur (85.73%).

“The individual scores of students seem to be better compared to last year, but the overall performance in some subjects has pulled down scores,” said Sobhana Vasudevan, principal of RA Podar College, Matunga.

As is the usual trend, girls performed better than boys across the state and in Mumbai region. Of the 6.5 lakh girls who appeared for the HSC exams, 90.95% cleared it, compared to 82.11% of 8.33 lakh boys who passed. In Mumbai, girls secured a pass percentage of 88.9%, compared to 80.65% among boys.

Simirita Janakiraman, a science student from the Andheri centre of coaching class IITian’s Pace, scored 96.92%. “I was consistently preparing for both the entrance exams [IIT JEE] as well as for the boards right from the beginning,” she said.

The science stream saw the highest number of successful candidates, with 94.57% of 5.8 lakh science students clearing the exams. The commerce stream, with 3.66 lakh candidates, registered a pass percentage of 87.16%, while in the arts stream, 73.42% of 4.78 lakh candidates passed.

This year, HSC exams were held between February 21 and March 20. In all, 14.85 lakh students, including 8.34 lakh boys and 6.5 lakh girls. As many as 17.85 lakh students — 9.73 lakh boys and 7.78 lakh girls — had appeared for the SSC exams held between March 1 and 24.

The state board put in place more flying squads to conduct surprise checks at exam centres in order to discourage malpractices during HSC exams this time round. Only 25 students were allowed in one exam hall, and question papers were divided into sets of 25 each so that centre supervisors did not have to open the bundles before they reached the hall. The state board also conducted a series of workshops in schools to ensure that no mobile phones were allowed inside exam centres, as most paper leaks take place over WhatsApp.

In 2017, five HSC question papers — Marathi, secretarial practice, political science, physics and mathematics/statistics — were leaked through WhatsApp just 30 minutes before the exams. Two such cases were also registered in 2016.
