‘Hand over land to Lajpat Nagar traders’ body for parking’

Green panel directs DUSIB to ease traffic congestion in area

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) to hand over a designated piece of land to the traders’ body of Lajpat Nagar for parking purposes.

A Bench headed by NGT Acting Chairperson Jawad Rahim had on May 25 directed the traders’ body and the DUSIB to visit the designated site and asked the latter to hand over the land if not done already.

‘Had allotted land’

The green panel had in 2015 allotted a piece of land, measuring approximately 5,000 square metres at Kasturba Niketan, to the Lajpat Nagar traders’ body for parking purposes in order to reduce traffic congestion.

While the counsel appearing for the traders’ body said the site was inaccessible to the traders, the counsel appearing for the DUSIB contended that the land was already in possession of the traders.

The directions came while the green panel was hearing a plea that sought execution of previous orders passed by the NGT, which had asked the DUSIB to allot the land as temporary parking site till the multi-level parking is built by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation. The plea had further stated that despite orders of the tribunal, vehicles were being parked on the metalled road and the sidewalks had also been encroached upon.
