15-year-old commits suicide

A 15-year-old allegedly committed suicide at her residence in east Delhi’s Madhu Vihar on Monday night, the police said on Tuesday. The police suspect the girl committed suicide after she was scolded by her brother for “wasting” time on the phone.

No suicide note has been recovered and the family does not suspect any foul play, the police said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Pankaj Singh said the minor hanged herself using her mother’s dupatta.

“The police control room received a call around 11 p.m., after which police reached the spot and rushed her to a nearby hospital. She was declared brought dead,” he said.

The police said the girl, who was a dropout, stayed with her family in their two-storey house.

“She was alone at home at the time of the incident. When the parents returned, they saw her hanging and called the police,” Mr. Singh said.

When investigators questioned the family, they were informed that she was scolded by the brother for “wasting time on her mobile phone”.

Mr. Singh said inquest proceedings have been initiated.
