Swim of life for baby Loggerhead turtle hatchlings

Baby Loggerhead turtle hatchlings being released 20km off Mooloolaba into the Eastern Australian Current where Loggerheads of this age begin the open ocean phase of their life.
These little guys will ride the Eastern Australian Current (or the EAC) past the northern tip of New Zealand and on to the coasts of Chile and Peru and they won’t return to Queensland waters for around 16 years.
The turtles hatched at the 2018 World Science Festival in Brisbane in a program aimed at highlighting the importance of the Mon Repos Loggerhead Turtle rookery as a conservation and ecotourism success story.
