Bus causes carnage after ploughing into 25 parked cars on shopping street in Dartford

A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of careless driving after a crash involving a bus and 25 vehicles in Dartford left 14 people injured.

Kent Police said a total of 25 vehicles were reported as damaged in the incident, which happened at around 6:50pm in Dartford town centre on Tuesday.

It added that 14 people were injured and required treatment at the scene on Hythe Street.b

The force said: A man has been arrested on suspicion of careless driving and remains in police custody.

The South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) and Kent Fire and Rescue Service were calso called to the scene. 

Crews helped paramedics to look after a number of people suffering from minor injuries.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews worked with SECAmb paramedics to look after a number of people suffering from minor injuries.

"One person required oxygen following the incident."

The road has been closed while recovery work is ongoing but is anticipated to reopen later this evening.

It is currently unknown what the cause of the crash was.

Express.co.uk has contacted Arriva for comment.

Pictures on social media show an Arriva 480 bus to Gravesend that appeared to have ploughed into the rear of a number of vehicles. 

Others showed cars with bumpers ripped off from the impact and smashed windows visible from down the high street.

People in the area took to social media to provide updates on the situation.

Brian Barnett tweeted: “Serious accident in Dartford. My car smashed! About 20 cars involved hit by a bus.”

Mick Allen wrote: "Bus appears to have careered down the road, wiping out around a dozen cars.

"Luckily no one appears to have been injured. Dartford again at a standstill."
