STAUNTON - Police interrupted a break-in while it was in progress early Sunday morning at a home in the 1000 block of West Beverley Street, where they found a suspect hiding in the basement.
Another suspect was captured after a brief foot chase, according to the Staunton Police Department.
Police were called to the home at 3:30 a.m. When they arrived, they spotted a man running from the residence. Officers chased the man on foot and he was caught on West Beverley Street near Montgomery Avenue, an arrest report said.
The suspect, Allen T. Howard III, 29, of Staunton, was caught with baseball memorabilia and brass items, police said.
His alleged accomplice, Colleen M. Higgins, 37, also of Staunton, was discovered by police hiding in the basement of the home.
Police believe the suspects got into the residence, which was unoccupied at the time, through an unlocked basement door.
Howard is charged with conspiracy to commit a felony, burglary, petty larceny and obstruction of justice.
Since 2010, Howard has spent the majority of his time in prison, court records show. In 2010, he was sentenced to three years in prison on charges of robbery and malicious wounding. In 2013, following his release from prison, Howard was arrested on Staunton gun and probation violation charges and was eventually sentenced to another five years in prison.
He was released from prison in February, according to the Virginia Department of Corrections.
Higgens faces charges of conspiracy to commit a felony and violating conditions of her release, police said. Prior to her arrest Sunday, Higgens was already facing four charges of breaking and entering in Staunton, court records show.
Both suspects are being held at Middle River Regional Jail with no bond, police said.
