Five arrested

The Sakharayapatna police, on Sunday night, arrested five people on the charge of transporting cattle in a vehicle. They seized the goods carrier in which they were carrying seven cattle.

The arrested are Imtiyaz, Mujeeb, Mohammed, Moahmmed Kashif and Akram, according to the police.

Acting on a tip-off, the police stopped the goods carrier around 9.45 p.m. at Pillenahalli Cross near Sakharayapatna in Chikkamagaluru taluk. Upon enquiry, the police came to know that the accused were carrying seven stray cattle to a slaughterhouse. The police seized the vehicle worth about ₹5 lakh and recovered ₹65,000 in cash from the accused.

A case has been registered against them under the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act, 1964.
