The police in the neighbouring Tapi district helped in reuniting a 20-year-old tribal woman with her infant son, who was allegedly taken away by her husband's first wife, an official said today.
Gaurishankar Gupta (40), a resident of Valod town in Tapi, located about 170 km from here, had three daughters with his first wife and desired a son.
The man, who ran a provisions store, later married the tribal woman, who used to work as a domestic help at his home, and she gave birth to a boy about one-and-a-half years ago, Valod police station's sub-inspector Ashwinkumar Khant told PTI over phone.
However, soon after the delivery Gupta's first wife took the boy into her custody and sometime back threw the child's biological mother out of their home, he said.
The tribal woman then lodged a complaint with the Valod police and sought help to get her son back.
Taking note of her plea, Khant went and spoke to Gupta's first wife yesterday and persuaded her to give the child to his biological mother.
Subsequently, the couple handed over the infant to his mother, the sub-inspector said.
